Behind Every Smile Is a Story
Seeing the person before the problem
7 min read
The work became more meaningful when I stopped seeing a case and began imagining the person who would live with the result.
A case belongs to someone
In a dental laboratory, a model or prescription can look purely technical. Yet every case belongs to a person with hopes, worries and a life much larger than the workbench.
The danger of labels
Healthcare and leadership require categories and records, but labels must never replace people. A diagnosis, behaviour or support need may explain part of a situation; it never tells the whole story.
Curiosity before judgement
Instead of asking what is wrong with someone, we can ask what they may be experiencing. Understanding does not excuse harmful behaviour, but it helps us respond more wisely.
Technology needs context
Data can tell us what happened, but not always what it meant. Human judgement must remain present whenever technology influences decisions about people.
The next person you meet may be carrying a story you cannot see. Pause long enough to notice the person.
